A day book or journal of work and various things / kept by Benjamin Gates, beginning October 1st 1827. 1827-1838.

"I, Benjamin Gates, this day came in to the new taylor's shop to work, & from this time, I expect to keep a journal of my work. To day I began to learn to make button Holes." Rather than just a detailed account of his life in the tailor shop, this diary includes references to Gates's other activities as well, such as carpentry, planting, and berrying. Its contents reveal the multitude of tasks a typical Shaker brother was expected to perform.
